The reasons you need a WMS system.

Such warehouse management systems are capable of locating inventory, providing configurable management for warehouse operations and coordinating inventory for shipping and receiving. Indeed, the more complex the operations being outfitted for a warehouse management system, the more complex that system must be. A warehouse management system is an arrangement of hardware and software networked for the purpose of managing a stockyard or warehouse.

For smaller operations, an inventory locator and counting module with a basic shipping-receiving module may be all that's needed. In fact, there are times when a WMS is unnecessary. With the information technology (IT) expertise compulsory to run fully functional WMS systems, putting a WMS into service is a good strategy only when you can realize a solid cost benefit.

For more complex operations with multi-building facilities and offsite stockyards, shelf-life or other product centric issues, migrating to a fully functional WMS that delivers a best-fit for the site in question is essential. Benefits include increased accuracy, increased productivity and substantial cost savings for a rapid return on investment (ROI) when implementing a WMS. In addition, a WMS typically reduces inventory quantities overall, and the costs associated with labor especially when used in concert with associated data collection systems and picking systems.

The most vital function of the WMS is to tender timely analysis and status of warehouse operations to management. Additionally, by implementing a WMS cross-functional visibility into the operation through its integration into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems can be realized.
