Why you need a WMS.
A warehouse management system is designed to find eaches, cases or pallets within the facility, allow management functions to configure operating parameters, and supply an mechanism for coordinating the shipping and receiving practice. Indeed, the more complex the operations being outfitted for a warehouse management system, the more complex that system must be. A warehouse management system is an arrangement of hardware and software networked for the purpose of managing a stockyard or warehouse.
When an operation is relatively simple, to manage a warehouse all that you need is a means to track product counts, a module for locating product and a mechanism for tracking shipping receiving activities. Often a WMS is unnecessary. Because the expertise of information technology (IT) professionals is often required to operate fully functional WMS systems, implementing a WMS is the right move only if the cost decrease offsets the costs of ownership.
For larger operations that may employ multiple buildings, offsite stockyards or product related algorithms such as those used for shelf-life concerns, a complete WMS providing sophisticated modules is fundamental. When a WMS is properly fitted for your facility, you can realize a dramatic increase in productivity and in shipping accuracy, with an equally dramatic reduction in errors. Furthermore, a WMS that is glove-fit for a facility delivers a reduction in labor costs and a reduction in on-hand quantities.
The WMS's function is to deliver near real time inventory status and analysis. Additionally, by implementing a WMS cross-functional visibility into the operation through its integration into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems can be realized.
