A WMS is necessary for your company

A warehouse management system is basically designed to locate SKU's in the facility, provide an interface for configuring management parameters, and provide an interface for the coordination of shipping and receiving efforts. As expected, how complex the WMS needs to be is related to how complex the warehouse is that it will serve. A warehouse management system is an arrangement of hardware and software networked for the purpose of managing a stockyard or warehouse.

To manage a simple warehouse all that is required is a product count module, a SKU locator and a simple means for handling shipping receiving operations. In fact, there are times when a WMS is unnecessary. Expertise in information technology (IT) is obligatory for running a complete WMS system, therefore whether to put a WMS into service is a function of realized cost benefit.

For large warehouse operations with multiple buildings, stockyards or even product-specific issues such as shelf-life considerations, a comprehensive WMS solution providing complex modules is vital. Benefits include increased accuracy, increased productivity and substantial cost savings for a rapid return on investment (ROI) when implementing a WMS. Additionally, a properly implemented WMS is known to reduce labor costs and overall inventory quantities.

The most essential function of a WMS is to offer management timely analysis and status of its warehouse operations. In addition, visibility into the warehouse operations across business functions is achievable by integrating the WMS into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
