What are the benefits of using a WMS?

A warehouse management system is basically designed to locate SKU's in the facility, provide an interface for configuring management parameters, and provide an interface for the coordination of shipping and receiving efforts. As with most complex systems, the more sophisticated the facility is being outfitted, the more complex the WMS must be. A warehouse management system is a network of computers running modules of software designed to fully manage a warehouse and stockyard.

For smaller operations, an inventory locator and counting module with a basic shipping-receiving module may be all that's needed. Sometimes, in fact, a WMS may not be necessary at all. Because the expertise of information technology (IT) professionals is often required to operate fully functional WMS systems, implementing a WMS is the right move only if the cost decrease offsets the costs of ownership.

Operations that are large and complex employing offsite stockyards, multiple buildings or complicated product-related metrics as found in calculating staging locations for products with a shelf-life, implementing a complete WMS that offers best-fit modules is essential. Benefits include increased accuracy, increased productivity and substantial cost savings for a rapid return on investment (ROI) when implementing a WMS. What's more, when a WMS is custom fit for a facility, the system can deliver labor cost reduction and inventories can be decreased due to higher efficiencies.

The function of the WMS is to provide manager's with up to the minute status and analysis of inventory by warehouse. In addition, visibility into the warehouse operations across business functions is achievable by integrating the WMS into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
